From the “Afterword” of this book
The owners of jazz kissas that opened in the 1960s and 1970s, when jazz kissas were at their peak, are now in their 70s and 80s, so in the next five years, more and more long-established establishments will close. However, at the same time, there is also an increasing number of cases where new people take over the business of old establishments. In particular, in recent years, there seems to be an increasing number of young people who want to run jazz kissas. Although jazz kissas will no longer be as prosperous as they were in their heyday, the chances of jazz kissas disappearing from this world have become much lower.
There are a total of 30 jazz kissas that I photographed in 2024. Of these, 12 have opened since 2015. In addition, there are four that have been taken over by new owners (《EIGAKAN》 will also be run by a new organization from this April). Please note that only three of these are in Tokyo. Most travelers who come to Japan first try to go to a jazz kissa in Tokyo, and I am often asked by my overseas friends, "Which jazz kissa should I go to in Tokyo?" However, it seems that the world of jazz kissas is currently seeing a lot of new growth, not in Tokyo, but in the regions, and it is in the regions that many old, traditional jazz kissas still remain. These stores are full of charm that will satisfy jazz kissa lovers. Of course, there are still great stores in Tokyo that you should visit, but I hope that this book will be one of the triggers that will pique jazz kissa lovers' interest in the regions.

ジャズ喫茶が最も多かった1960年代から1970年代に開業した店主たちもいまや70歳代から80歳代を迎えているため、これから5年間のうちに古い歴史のある店の閉業はこれまで以上に増えるだろう。だがその一方で新しい人たちによって古い店が事業継承されるパターンも増えている。とりわけ、ここ数年の現象として「ジャズ喫茶をやりたい」という若い世代が増えているようだ。全盛期ほどの活況を呈することはもはやないだろうが、ジャズ喫茶がこの世から消えてしまう確率はかなり低くなっただろう。
2024年に私が撮影したジャズ喫茶はぜんぶで30店。そのなかで2015年以降に開業したのは12店だ。またそれに加えて、事業継承をして新しいオーナーによって経営されているのは４店（『JAZZ 喫茶映画館』もこの4月から新しい団体によって運営される）。これらのなかで東京の店はわずかに3店であることにも着目していただきたい。日本にやってくる旅行者たちの大半は、まず東京のジャズ喫茶に行こうとするし、私もよく海外の友人たちから「東京のジャズ喫茶のどこに行けばいい？」と質問される。しかし、いまジャズ喫茶の世界で新陳代謝が活発なのは東京ではなく地方のようであるし、また古い、伝統のあるジャズ喫茶がいまも多く残っているのも地方だ。これらの店はジャズ喫茶愛好者たちを満足させる魅力に溢れている。もちろん、東京の素晴らしい店、あなたが行くべき店は健在だが、この本がジャズ喫茶愛好家たちの地方にも関心を抱くきっかけのひとつになればいいと思う。
