Attention users in the United States
As of August 29, the U.S. government abolished duty-free access for all shipments entering the United States. In response to this action, Japan Post has temporarily suspended the acceptance of mail containing items intended for sale to the United States. As a result, we are no longer able to deliver to our customers using Japan Post.
As an alternative shipping method, we are currently using international courier service, a partnership between Yamato of Japan and UPS of the United States. This is currently the cheapest alternative to Japan Post. Thank you for your understanding.
EU residents will have to pay additional taxes such as VAT when receiving the package. We don't know if all EU countries use the same system, but a common system is that once the package arrives at customs, the recipient receives an email asking whether you wish to pay the VAT applied to the package. If you do not respond by the deadline or reply "not received," the package will be returned to Japan. Please check this email carefully .

From the “Afterword” of this book
Just before I began writing this “Afterword,” DUG in Shinjuku, Tokyo, announced its closure on social media. DIG, which opened in 1961, was a jazz kissa that spread the style of a Zen temple-like establishment nationwide, strictly enforcing a no-talking rule. DUG, which opened as its sister store in 1967, was a pioneer of the modern listening bar style, where customers could enjoy conversation while listening to jazz. With DIG closing in 1983 and DUG closing in 2026, the DIG-DUG duo, a symbol of Japanese jazz kissa culture, will close its 65-year history. The reason for DUG’s closure seems to be “due to the demolition of the building.” Currently, large-scale redevelopment is actively underway in major Japanese cities, and old buildings are being ruthlessly torn down and disappearing. Shinjuku 3-chome, where “DUG” is located, is one of the most expensive areas in Tokyo in terms of land prices. It was a miracle that a “kissaten” with low average customer spending could operate there until now, but it’s unlikely that we’ll see another jazz kissa like it in Tokyo.
Currently, finding a property with low rent is the most important challenge for opening a jazz kissa in Tokyo, and this often restricts the owner’s vision. On the other hand, in rural areas where land prices are still low, it’s possible to open a jazz kissa that faithfully reflects the owner’s intentions, and “Junkokudou,” featured on the cover of this book, is one such example. Opened 10 years ago in Kagoshima, about 1,300 km from Tokyo in the southernmost part of the Japanese archipelago, this store embodies the ideal form of a jazz kissa. Such stores are still thriving in various regions of Japan, and they have the potential to create a new wave. Just as the closing announcement for “DUG” ended with the words “To be continued…”, the 100-year history of jazz kissa is far from over.

「DUG」の閉店告知の最後が「To be continued…」
